4 Tips for organising a Fall Wedding

Pin It Now!

Guest Post by Evelyn Luo

4 ways to celebrate the bounties of fall on your special day

The summer wedding season is nearing its end to make way for a bevy of fall brides. And I say good riddance! I got married in the fall because I love this season most of all. Why? Well when you consider that summer was dang hot, winter is too cold, and spring is too unpredictably wet, fall weddings provide a colorfully perfect canvas for a romantic wedding that screams new beginnings ahead.
In fall the leaves are not only beautiful hues of orange, yellow, and red—the air is also crisp for dressing your best without being uncomfortable—so the idea of an outdoor wedding or reception like I had is bountiful when you consider nature’s great backdrops to mark your special day.

Here are my four tips for organizing a beautiful fall wedding.

1. Fall wedding dresses

I admit; I chose fall for my wedding mostly because I fell in love with the styles for fall. And when you take a gander at the 2013 styles of wedding dresses and bridesmaid’s dresses, you will be swept away by the rich fabrics and colors available to you. I went with a classic A-line wedding gown in a rich cream color with burnt orange details (i.e., a sash that tied into a bow at the back of the dress and hair flowers). My bridesmaids wore back gowns with coordinated sashes of yellow, orange, and red, which was breathtaking against the outdoor ceremony location.

2. Try on a fall themed wedding
In fall wedding themes are abundant! Just think of giving thanks for your love at a Thanksgiving themed wedding or incorporating costumes into a Halloween themed wedding. Of course your wedding décor, floral decorations, table centerpieces, and wedding favors can all suit your theme for a consistency. Think horns of plenty stuffed with autumn fruits for centerpieces or mini Halloween treat bags as wedding favors.

3. Wedding décor

For my own fall wedding, I borrowed from the season’s colors, which are rich and vibrant. I incorporated dried straw, corn husks, dried flowers, and fat gourds into my color spectrum. Out wedding reception was outside, and we created a dance floor with bales of hay surrounding the perimeter with colorful pumpkins and odd shaped gourds on top of each one.

4. Fall food a plenty

My own fall wedding menu really took a chunk out of the season’s bountiful food provisions. I recommend you do the same if you’re concerned with sourcing locally. We started out wedding menu off with a thick squash soup, followed by a zucchini and apple salad, for dinner was a stuffed pumpkin ravioli covered in crisp pecans, and for desert we ditched the traditional wedding cake for serve yourself pumpkin pie and apple crisp.

3 Tips for cooling down your summer wedding

Pin It Now!

There are many wonderful benefits to having a summer wedding: beautiful skies and flowers, breathtaking sunsets, active wildlife, gorgeous settings. But these can all be undermined by one aspect of summer: the heat. Depending on the location of your wedding, temperatures can reach dangerously high levels in the summer. A
wedding should be a happy day for all who are present including the bride, groom, family members and friends. The last thing that should be a concern for anyone involved is the climate. Miserable temperatures can distract from the bliss and joy that come along with a wedding. This is not to recommend against a summer
wedding by any means, but here are a few tips you may want to consider to ensure that your summer wedding is everything it should be and more!

1. Water, water, water

The most dangerous part of the summer time heat is dehydration. Your wedding day should be YOUR day, and you don’t want to spend it worrying about the comfort of you or your guests. One of the best ways to keep you, your family, and your guests happy and comfortable is to have lots and lots of water easily accessible in all facilities where your guests may be found. By staying hydrated, everyone at the wedding will feel better, have more energy, and can focus on the people they love and are there to support.

2. Shady spots

Another great way you can help your guests escape the heat is by providing shade. If your wedding is outdoors, the constant presence of the sun’s beaming rays can wear people down and keep the temperatures high. But by offering areas of shade, you can all cool off and step out of the sun when necessary, while never leaving the party! Choosing a setting near trees is a great, inexpensive way to include some shady areas. However, if your ceremony or reception is away from any trees, a tent or two will do the job just as well.

3. Fans all around

Now when you think of giant fans at an outdoor wedding, it may seem tacky at first. There are lots of small, nice looking fans, however, that are portable and can be placed almost anywhere. If you have a tent-covered reception, place a fan at each corner of the tent facing inward or at the corners of the buffet tables. Having them scattered around but out of the way will keep your guests cool without even being noticed. If you’re doing an indoor wedding, turn on the air conditioning and all fans inside the building long before the wedding starts. This will get the building cooled down before the guests arrive because the area will quickly be armed when lots of guests arrive.

Our Thoughts on Our Fabulous Reception at The Westin Dublin.

Pin It Now!

Gorgeous Couple, Brendan & Rossa, who recently hosted their Reception at The Westin Dublin have been kind enough to share with us their memories of their happy and special day and why it is they chose The Westin Dublin.

1. Tell us why you chose The Westin Dublin as your venue?

We looked at several venues in all price ranges and locations. We chose the Westin for its convenient city centre location and more importantly for its great ambience. The Banking Hall has a real wow factor, and the Atrium is also very impressive. As we were planning a medium sized reception for 80-90 people, cost was a somewhat important factor. The Westin seemed to be at the more expensive end of the range we were looking at, but actually when we added everything up, the premium over much less impressive locations was relatively small. We expected to be able to justify the premium in terms of the ambience and quality. And so it turned out, in spades.

2. What was so unique or special about the venue for you?

It's hard to pick one. As we said, the Banking Hall and the Atrium are fantastic spaces for any event. The presidential suite was also pretty amazing, even though that didn't form part of our decision process.

3. What's your favourite memory of your special day here?

On a personal level, it has to be the speech that our "best man" made, which was very touching. From the point of view of the hotel, it was the 20-minute nap that the hotel's wedding co-ordinator insisted we take, between the Reception and Dinner. It enabled us to survive the rest of the long day! I know you'll ask us later about the attention to detail, the quality of the food and the quality of the service, all of which made it a very special day.

4. What's your favourite photo (and why), taken on the day, at The Westin Dublin?

Our wedding co-ordinator took a really nice picture of the two of us on our way to the Reception, and she had it ready in our suite later that evening. It was a lovely surprise. There were several very nice unposed shots taken by our photographer and guests. And one of favourite gifts was a camcorder with the whole of the evening's festivities recorded on it by one of our friends.

5. What did you serve at your reception? Tell us about the meal?

Before getting into the details, can we say that every single guest was extremely complimentary about the food. We started with a goat's cheese tartlet, followed by butternut squash soup. We had a special champagne sorbet course, and decided to hold the speeches at that point of the evening, so that we and the guests had had something to eat but were not yet stuffed. For main course we had beef fillet medallions which were extremely tender. Dessert was white chocolate mousse. We were lucky that our party had only a few people who needed special diets, but the hotel were extremely accommodating and checked personally with each guest before service started. The feedback was 100% complimentary.

6. Did you do anything special or different on your special day at the venue?

The whole event was very special. We were lucky to have selected a great wedding band, Perfect Day.

7. What would you say to couples considering The Westin Dublin as their venue?

If you're worried about the cost, be sure you are doing a like-for-like comparison, and factor in the excellent quality. We cannot praise the food and service highly enough. The interior of the hotel has some great photogenic locations, but for outdoor shots you should plan some time in St Stephen's Green, or across the street in Trinity College.

8. What would you say about the staff at The Westin Dublin?

Superb. I've never before been at an event where the sole focus of the staff seemed to be to make the experience as enjoyable as humanly possible for all the guests and particularly ourselves. This applies to every staff member that we met - our wedding planners, the restaurant management team and every single member of the waiting staff.

9. What are your thoughts on the Presidential Suite at The Westin Dublin?

We wish our apartment was as big and luxurious - it would be interesting to find out what other (!) celebrities have stayed there. It is a haven of tranquility, particularly given the hectic times outside the room. Hint to any couple: Book it for the night of the dinner (of course) and also for at least one more night so that you can spend the day after your celebration recovering in luxury

10. What is your favourite spot/ place at The Westin Dublin?

The banking hall with its stunning murals and chandeliers. On second thoughts - it has to be the atrium bar reaching to the sky while you have a cocktail or canape. No hold on - the presidential suite was our private enclave. Just can't decide.

Five {Wedding} Minutes with...Clara of Clara Magee Designs

Pin It Now!

....Well more like 7 wedding minutes..there was just too much to ask!!

1. Tell us about your company

Clara Magee Designs offers a bespoke millinery service exclusively designing individual head pieces for all occasions. Every creation is lovingly crafted and hand-made to the client’s personal requirements from size, style, colour, materials and trimmings. No hat is ever the same because my designs are about creating a unique head piece, combining the fashion mood of the moment with the wearer’s own style and personality.

2. How did you become a Milliner?

As an avid race goer and with plenty of weddings to go to I found that the market was limited in what it had to offer in terms of tailor made pieces. With a strong interest in art and design I decided to undertake a couple of millinery workshops in 2009 with Beads and Bling. What started out as a hobby, purely making pieces for myself, soon turned into a successful business.

It wasn’t until 2010, while living in Sydney that I realised my true passion for hat design after studying under renowned Australian milliner, Jane Stoddart, a fantastic teacher and an inspiration. Upon my return to Ireland I was also lucky enough to study under well-known Irish milliner, Aileen Keogan, at the Grafton Academy of Art and Design.

3.What service do you offer?

All of my headpieces are my own unique designs. They are hand sewn and created using the highest quality materials. Commissioning a piece from me usually starts with a detailed consultation whereby the client and I will discuss their outfit and any thoughts around what they envision for the piece. Every person is different and unique in their request, from the most refined piece to the ethereal, so at this early stage I’ll try to establish the style, shape and design of the hat. Some clients like to be heavily involved and others let me guide them as to what I think will suit best.

Many of my wedding commissions are for mother of the bride/groom. For me, this is one of the most important, as having watched my own mother carefully pick out every detail of her outfits for both my brother's weddings, I understand the importance of feeling your best and most confident on the big day. A priority for me is being able to put the client at ease, making them feel relaxed and special. You can’t underestimate honesty in this line of work and so my policy is an open line of communication from that initial consultation.

Once I start working on my designs I also make it a priority to catalogue the piece throughout the stages of design. This way I can send on any photographs to update the client and it negates any nasty surprises once complete!
My pricing is very competitive, so alongside the fact that no one else will be wearing the same piece, the client gets good value for money and a personalised service.

4. What’s your favourite part about designing hats?

Part of what I love most about designing pieces are the people I meet along the way and the satisfaction of seeing someone proudly wearing my creations. Being able to have a creative outlet has provided me with a way to express myself. I also love how hats create a stir, a glance, a comment or a nod of approval or disapproval. Hats are always a great conversation starter!

5. Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

My clients are a huge inspiration – their own look and taste can often determine the style and design of my hats.
At the moment the majority of my work is also based on two themes – structure and form or flower detailing. On one hand I love clean lines and simplicity, with an emphasis on lines and angles to work with faces.  Teamed with the right outfit, I believe you can never underestimate how striking a simple piece can look.
As a total opposite to this I enjoy using flowers to add a feminine, softer element to my pieces. Madison a faux flower shop based in Dublin City Centre is where I find most of my inspiration for this. Aoife Moulton (owner) is always on hand to lend her thoughts on new trends and stocks the shop with flowers that suit the extravagant to the elegant.

6. What’s your biggest tip or piece of advice for a mother of the bride/groom?

I believe the mother of the bride/groom should reflect her personality in everything she wears, from head to toe. To me a hat is all about personality, it must be interesting yet stylish, reflecting its own style and that of the wearer. It’s all about creating a subtle elegance that will ensure she feels a million dollars on the day.

7. How can clients get in touch with you?

How to choose your wedding photographer successfully

Pin It Now!

Guest Post by Elle Williams

Your wedding photos are essentially stored memories, so getting the perfect photographer is paramount to a perfect wedding! You wedding lasts a day, but your photos will last a lifetime so make sure you’re investing in the very best!

1. Do your homework!

Thorough research, background checks and references are crucial in order to determine you’re in the hands of a good photographer!

2. Attend wedding fairs.

These are great for meeting photographers, comparing albums and examples of numerous photographers at once and meeting other couples to exchange tips and advice.

3. Meet the photographer in advance.

Give them a clear idea of what you want and how you want it done! It also makes for a smoother process if you’ve both sat down and spoken clearly and openly about the styles, themes and approaches of the photography; this leaves out any nasty surprises! You want to feel comfortable with your photographer too, so meet in a couple of months or four weeks in advance at least to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible!

4. Don’t be afraid to ask about the bill!

When it comes to the bill make sure you’re both talking in crystal clear, hard terms to prevent any ‘additional costs’! Many photographers have a range of different packages, aimed at different tastes and budgets, so make sure you research and explore enough to get the very best value for what you’re paying!

5. Provide them with a shot list.

Include all the particular moments you want photos to be taken. This is really important; don’t assume the photographer will be able to telepathically understand at which points you want photos of the most. This must be stressed in particular for those who also want the natural, candid shots! By creating a shot list you’re also making their job a lot easier, and straightforward preventing any disagreements, after the day.

Guestpost by MileHigh Wedding Band

Now that the dust has settled and everyone has recovered from the 3 day celeb packed party here are some details from the day from the perspective of the entertainment and music. Milehigh were delighted to be chosen by Daithi and Rita for their wedding in Tralee and the guys were one of the most relaxed couples we have dealt with. Both are very easy going and really at the end of the day are like any other wedding couple. They wanted their guests to be looked after and for everyone to have a great time.

The Milehigh Wedding Band with newly weds Daithi and Rita O'Shea

The band arrived at The Carton Hotel at 2pm to set up early, do our sound check and get prepared for the day. Once done the band could set up our equipment for the arrivals reception which was the first part of the entertainment package for the day. The Arrivals Reception started at 3.30 and played until guests were called to dinner at 5pm. We performed a 4 Piece Instrumental Set for the arriving guests and included some Jazz and Instrumental Classics.

After the dinner was completed we assisted the Irish Dancers with their music and once finished the band took to the stage at 11.30pm. For their first song Daith & Rita chose “Feels Like Home” by Chantal Kreviazuk. The band performed the song fully live and was sung by Sandra to warm applause by the crowd when Daithi and Rita were called for their first song. After the first song Rita had requested “If I Shall Fall Behind” by Bruce Springsteen as her Father-Daughter song. During this song Daithi had a dance with his Mam as well.

After the first two slower songs it was party time and the band kicked into action with some up tempo floor fillers to get everyone out dancing. A mixture of some old school rock and roll and some modern classic were played to get everyone energised and up on the dance floor.

We played until about 12.45 and then took a break for tea refreshments and for Daithi’s Dad Maidhc to entertain the audience with his own trad band. They were very good and very entertaining and kept everyone entertained during the break. After that there was also a young troupe of Irish Dancers that performed for about 20 minutes and were excellent and had everyone on their feet taking pictures.

Once back on the band played a mixture some Irish, Rock and Roll and some very Modern Music. Everything from Adele and Florence & The Machine to Snow Patrol and some Guns and Roses (Daithi is a real Gunners fan. Who would have known!). We ended the night at 2.30am with River Deep Mountain High and then it was over to DJ Brian. Off to bed and back the next day to pack up the gear. More weddings Friday & Saturday as the Milehigh Train keeps on rolling!

Wedding Guest Outfit Inspiration

Pin It Now!

Guest Post by Sarah Leeds

For any wedding guest, choosing the right outfit can be a real headache. There are so many influences from style of wedding to location and even weather. Not to mention the do’s and don’ts, meaning it isn’t just the bride who has a lot to think about! But since weddings are supposed to be a time of celebration here’s a few tips to take the stress out of shopping for the perfect wedding outfit…

Whether you’re a wedding guest or mother of the bride, the location of a wedding will be the most influential factor in your choice of outfit. For a beach wedding choose light cottons and delicate chiffon for a more relaxed feel. A city wedding will suit more structured fabrics such as an A-line skirt with a complementing tailored jacket. But don’t just think about your surroundings, the weather will play a huge part in your decision. It is important to be comfortable in what you’re wearing so you can focus on enjoying such a special day!

Length
One rule it’s always best to stick to is this… wear a dress or skirt that sits on or just below the knee. There are very few weddings where you can get away with anything shorter, and there are still three lengths to choose from. For an elegant mother of the bride look opt for a knee length shift dress with matching jacket. Or go for a midi length bias cut dress in layered chiffon for a stylish look that will flatter all shapes. If you’re a younger wedding guest you can get away with being more adventurous. Wear an on-trend maxi dress with chunky wedges to add height, or a knee length skater dress with a cinched in waist. Just remember not to upstage the bride!

Colour
The colour you choose will be influenced by the style and colour theme of the wedding. So it’s best not to start shopping until you’ve checked this out. This is particularly true for any mother of the bride. For you it’s best to choose a shade that complements, but doesn’t match, the rest of the wedding party. The golden rule at any wedding is never wear white, or cream. Unless you’re going to an incredibly unconventional wedding the bride won’t thank you for it! On-trend colours for summer are inspired by the sea, so look out for greens, blues and corals. For a colour that will take you through to next season opt for purples and muted tones such as grey and cappuccino.

How to make Your Own Beautiful Bouquet

Pin It Now!

Guest Post by Marcelina Hardy

I’m a bouquet snob. When I got married, I could not find a bouquet that met all my expectations. All I wanted was a bouquet that had white and pink ranunculus, cranberry tulips, and some columbine as accents. While that may not sound like a big deal to you, my florist grumbled, and told me I would have to pay extra for the flowers she would have to order. Instead of causing an all-out war with my small town florist, and risk no one coming to my wedding out of defense for the florist, I decided to make it my own.

First Step: Finding the Flowers

My first plan of attack was finding the flowers. The Internet is a marvellous invention. It took me less than an hour to find the flowers that I needed for my bouquet – and why did she grumble, again?
Once I found a reputable flower distributor, I placed my order for them. The distributor promised they would arrive within the week, which was good since my wedding was 7 day away.
In the meantime, I went to the craft store to purchase all that I needed to construct the bouquet.

I bought:

  • A bucket
  • Vase
  • Paper towels
  • Ribbon
  • Rubber bands
  • Stem cutter
  • Stem stripper
  • Straight pins

When my 40 stemmed flowers and columbine arrived, I went right to work on my creation. Here’s what I did to make my beautiful bouquet:

Step #1: I removed all of the foliage I didn’t need on the stem.

Step #2: While holding the stems in the bucket of water, I trimmed the ends. I allowed the flowers to drink some water for a few seconds before transferring them to a vase with cool water in it.

Step #3: To assemble them, I started with the middle of the bouquet first. I used one hand (my left) to hold the flowers, and then used my right to add flowers to the bouquet. I found that standing in front of a mirror was a great way to see how the bouquet would look to others as I held it. That way, as I was constructing it, I could make adjustments as I saw fit.

Step #4: I secured the bouquet with my rubber bands. I wrapped them at the place where the flowers joined.

Step #5: To hide the rubber bands, I used my ribbon, which was the same color as my cranberry tulips. It really brought out the cranberry color for my fall wedding.
I simply wrapped the bouquet with the ribbon all the way down as long as I wanted them. I used my pins to secure the ribbon to the stems of the flowers.

Step #6: Once my bouquet was complete, I returned it to the vase, and misted the flowers.

Step #7: The morning of the wedding, I cut all the extra steps off, and brought the ribbon over the end of the stems.

Step #8: I placed my bouquet in the fridge until it was ready for me.

My Bouquet Masterpiece was the 'Talk of the Town', everyone asked me if I used the local florist for the creation of my bouquet. Instead of telling them that the florist could have never created such a beautiful bouquet, I told them that I decided to do something special by making my own. They marveled over it. They couldn’t stop talking about how lovely it was, and how talented I was in making it myself. One person even said that maybe I should open up my own floral shop.
I have my bouquet dried in my bedroom now. It will be something I will cherish forever, along with my marriage.
