The Dangers of Letting Your Mom Plan Your Wedding & How to Handle Them

Pin It Now!

Guest Post by Abby Bramski

Getting Mom's Help in Wedding Planning

Most mothers are thrilled when they find out the news that their daughter is getting married. So if you
have recently delivered this exciting news to your own mother, there is a good chance that she has
offered to help you when it comes to planning out specific details of the wedding. And while this can
be a blessing, and it is certainly nice to have all the help you can get, it is important to recognize that
you may not want to let your mother get too carried away with wedding planning, as there is a lot that
can go wrong. Instead, you may want to sit her down and have a talk with her prior to beginning your
wedding plan in order to set some ground rules and have things go as smoothly as possible.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

There are various possibilities as to what might go wrong if you let your mother take control of too
much of your wedding planning. For starters, moms tend to get so excited over their daughters’
weddings that they overdo certain aspects of it. For example, you may find that she is picking out floral arrangements or other décor that are way more extravagant than something you would ideally pick out for yourself.

This ties in to another common problem in letting moms plan weddings: a difference in taste and
opinion. You own mother will likely have her own wedding planning experience to refer back to as she tries to plan yours. And, depending on how long ago her own wedding is, some of the things she might pick out or have planned could be considered outdated today. And of course, there is no easy way of telling her this, which is why it is best to have a conversation before hand, stating that you would love her assistance and input in planning the wedding. However, at the end of the day, it is your wedding, so you should be able to make your own decisions, especially when it comes to fine details.

How to Handle It

If your mother has begun to take over your wedding planning process to your dismay, the best thing to do is to sit her down and start by thanking her for all of her help. Then, calmly explain to her that this is a once in a lifetime chance for you to plan your wedding and pick out things that you want to have for your special day. Explain that you still want her to be a big part of this but that you would prefer to make more of your own decisions. From there, you can continue with your wedding planning and still have her support.

SAM AND SARAH'S ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

Pin It Now!

Sam and Sarah originally met in their first year of university in Birmingham and are due to tie the knot in Summer time: August 2012. For their engagement photographs they wanted to go somewhere that meant a lot to them and that was scenic and romantic too – so they finally decided on picking the grounds of Birmingham University – where they met and fell in love! The campus is full of big traditional buildings and beautiful architecture, so it made the perfect location for their special day.

Sam and Sarah have been together for nearly four years now, and have been engaged for one year, Sam proposed last year over a rather special Breakfast and bought his bride-to-be a stunning ring which he had been searching long for. The couple knew several close friends who had married the summer before (last year) and so the anticipation has definitely been building for quite a while. They’re so excited to have their big day and celebrate the beginning of their life together with everyone they know and love.

The wedding will take place in the bride’s home-town which is Oxford in the UK. Oxford is known for being a beautiful scenic city and the couple have lots of wonderful, cute things planned for the day. Sam and Sarah love all things retro and vintage – so they’re big day will be a down-to-earth affair with all the thoughtfulness in the details. Family and friends will be at the very heart of the day.

The couple wanted pretty, cute, retro style photographs that exhibited their relationship and represented them as a couple. Sarah had spent a long time in the past months looking at gorgeous photos from all kinds of wedding blogs –and wanted something just as special and gorgeous for hers. In every photo it’s pretty clear how in love this couple are and how infectious their energy is too. Just the look in their eyes is enough to convince anyone of the love there!

The couple also wanted to mark the occasion with special gifts too –and as readers and book lovers they each had a personally bound book made by Calle Arco. It’s an adorable idea to purchase a gift to mark your engagement photographs and proposal and giving a newly bound and personal book is something you’ll never throw away and means that even in 50 years time when they read them, they can remember that special day together and all the happy memories that came with it.

Sarah and Sam have loved looking at other peoples decorations and wedding photography to take as inspiration for their own big day as the more ideas the better! They hope their photographs can perhaps provide others with the same inspiration they needed!

Sarah says of her relationship with Sam:
Sam is my best friend. He's been my best friend since we first met and I know he's going to be my best friend for many more years to come. We've had some of the best times together, and faced difficult times together, but we are a team and although we don't always seem to get it perfect, we are wonderfully covered by God's grace. Sam asking me to be his wife will be one of those moments I will treasure forever. Obviously I am excited for our special day, to have all the people we love and care about in one place together will be the most wonderful thing, but most of all I am so excited for our future together, the adventures that are to come. I am excited that we get to experience them together and share in each other’s joys and sufferings. I can't wait to be Sam's wife and I can't wait to do life together”

BIG THANK YOU to Elle Rose Williams and of course the gorgeous Sarah & Sam for sharing this beautiful shoot with us. We do hope to see some wedding pics some day soon! Be sure to check out Elle Rose would love for you to check out this beautiful Jewellery site.

Wedding Cake Alternatives: Thinking Small.

Pin It Now!
Guest Post by Anna Knight

There are so many mouth-watering wedding cake options out there that it can be hard to know where to start (apart from sampling as many as humanly possible, of course). Increasingly though, couples have been creating stunning displays of single-serving treats in lieu of the traditional cake. If you’re thinking of going small on your big day, here’s some food for thought!

Make a statement

The cake is the centrepiece of your wedding banquet, so if you’re going to replace it, it better be with something equally visually arresting. Cupcakes are a versatile choice as you can set them up in so many different ways, such as building a tiered cupcake pyramid with different flavours on each level. You can top the sugary mountain with a standard-size cake, so you needn’t forgo that all-important cake-cutting moment. Or try giving your highest tier a quirk by using a single giant cupcake, complete with decadent swirls of buttery frosting. Yum!

Everybody’s happy

OK, so you can’t please all of the people all the time. However, by putting a wide range of options on offer you can certainly increase the number of guests who do leave your reception stuffed and satisfied! With single servings – whether you’re going for cookies, cupcakes or chocolate truffles - you get the chance to mix all types of flavours. Plenty of people don’t like traditional fruitcake, but you’d be unlucky to host a wedding where no one likes Oreo flavour or banana or red velvet or peanut butter…you get the idea. Offering a broad selection of smaller bites will mean picky eaters and omnivorous guests alike are equally happy.

Fuss-free feasting

Kids: They’re messy. Cake: It’s messy. When two inherently messy things collide, the result is seldom pleasant. Implement some damage control by providing one-bite dainties such as macaroons. Without crumbs or sticky frosting, they melt on the tongue in seconds; and with every colour in the rainbow available, they don’t lose marks on kid appeal. Your adult guests benefit too, as these delicate delights will leave them bloat- free and dance-floor-ready in a way that heavy wedding cake never could.

Variety is the spice of life

Once you stray from the idea of a single wedding cake, you open up a world of truly endless options! From doughnuts to chocolates to cutesy cake pops, you’re sure to find something that fits the aesthetic and feel of your wedding. You can even go healthy with a beautiful fruit display, perfect for summer. Or skip the solid centrepiece and set up a massive chocolate fountain, surrounded by stacks of strawberries and marshmallows for dipping. That way, guests will have something to gather around, and the sweet stuff keeps flowing all night long.

Whatever option you go with, every aspect of your wedding is an opportunity for you to get creative – and cake is certainly no exception. And remember, sometimes great things really do come in small packages!

Blá's Idea of the Day: Floating Arrangements.

Pin It Now!
LOVE this, not least for the colour, but mostly cause its something I don't see very often at weddings. I think it makes the perfect 'pew end' or aisle liner, particularly for an outdoor ceremony. I would work equally as well in glass vases for your centrepieces!

Blá's Idea of the Day: Share Your Love

I love this idea, simple and so lovely!

The groom writes down all the things he loves about this bride and the bride does the same for her groom. A beautiful touch to share with your guests at the drink reception, on the back of your ceremony program or even as your centrepiece.

Behind the scenes in the Bridal Suite at The Westin Dublin

Pin It Now!
For me, a Bridal Suite must be two things, luxurious and decadent and the bridal suite at the Westin Dublin is both those and more! The two storey, 6 roomed bridal suite not only has a gym, steam room, gorgeous views of Dublin City plus all the luxuries you would expect of a 5 star luxury hotel but also boasts a library featuring a hidden entrance way, perfect for those all-important ‘first look’ photographs!

Example of a 'First Look' Photo

Practically speaking the Bridal Suite is abundantly spacious with gorgeous light and is the perfect place for you and your bridesmaids to lounge about and enjoy a champagne breakfast while your team of professionals attend to your hair and make-up. With a sitting room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom and library, two staircases and two mezzanine floors, there are numerous options for fantastic internal photographs before your ceremony! Not to mention the balcony overlooking some of Dublin’s most famous sights ~ ideal for those unique skyline views of you and your wedding party.

As you would expect from the Westin Dublin, no expense has been spared on the design of the Bridal Suite. The very best in finishes have been selected and they have created a romantic, relaxed suite of rooms. Everything from the soft rugs to the dramatic luscious drapes and tassels and exquisite décor make this a suite with grandeur you will not have experienced before!

Of course the bed is to die for! The mattress envelopes you into a cocoon of cloud and the linens are fit for Royalty! And is it any wonder that it does, aptly named The Westin Heavenly Bed®, it offers 'ten layers of heaven', starting with a custom designed pillow mattress set, and is topped by an unbelievably plush down comforter and five queen and king size pillows. This is ‘the’ bed to just float into!

The heavenly experience doesn’t stop there! Oh no! The bath, perfect for two of course, has jets and streams and bubbles that make you never want to leave, which is made even harder by all the delicious goodies and treats they’ve filled the bathroom with for you to pamper yourself! The Westin Dublin’s White Tea Bath and Body range is amazing! The fragrance is sensuous and they leave your skin unbelievably
moisturised, smooth and silky!

I have to say, if they would have let me stay {and hadn’t found me sneaking back in the hidden door} I would have happily moved in! If you are a bride or groom of the Westin Dublin, you are in for a treat on your wedding night!
