What I want for my birthday; to give 30 wishes.

Pin It Now!
I know this is not a 'traditional' Wedding High' blog post... but it is something I wanted to share with you all and perhaps you would even like to 'partake' by 'wishing' or help 'grant' :)

I turn 30 this year. On June 24th to be exact. A big milestone for me... my biggest so far ;)

Almost since my 29th I've been exploring ideas as to what I might like to do, a weekend away, a day at the spa, a big birthday bash, a quite intimate dinner with friends... all really nice options, but nothing quiet hitting the mark.

I want to do something... something big... something with meaning... It only hit me yesterday that that doesn't have to be something for myself. { Selfish I know to only think of myself. } I've been so blessed in my life, I've never wanted for anything I truly needed, never gone hungry, cold or without love. But its not even about that...

For 29 years I've always received gifts, cards and well wishes on my birthday... { which has been lovely { and I still LOVE gifts, cards and well wishes :}  } but this year what I really want for my birthday is to make 30 wishes come through for 30 people. I'm no millionaire so I won't be sending anyone to the moon { unless of course the Russian Space Program want to come on board and help me with one of my birthday wishes for someone else ;) } but anything I can do, or ask a friend or family member, { who would normally give me a gift }, can do to make someone's wish come true, I want to do it.

Thirty is such a great age to reach, many of my friends haven't made it this far, and I want to give back in thanks to the world by making 30 peoples wishes come true, on or before my birthday.

So if you have a wish, share it with me, if I can, I'll do my best to make it come true.

And if you want to help make some wishes come true... please get in touch.

Please get in touch by leaving a comment below or emailing me direct at blaithin.oreillymurphy@gmail.com

{oh and of course your wish doesn't have to have anything to do with weddings at all!}

Thank you all!!

DIY Cloud Lights for your Wedding.

Pin It Now!

How amazing would these look hung around your reception  hall or indeed at an outdoor ceremony! And super easy to make too!!

What you will need:

  • Cotton Batting { cleansing pleats to some }
  • Paper Lanterns
  • Flameless Candles{ Ideally Super Cool LED ones }
  • Hot Glue Gun
{ The amounts you will need will depend on the number of lanterns, their size and brightness you want, you might need to test a bit to get your desired effect.}

N.B. I know from others who have contacted me who have also made this Cloud Light that they had issues with the heat created by their chosen Flameless Candles... { the photographer of the beautiful image above, Alexis Mire included }  be sure that little or no heat is generated by the ones you use and with all 'candles' do no leave unattended.

Step by Step instructions:

1.Pull at the cotton batting until it looks fluffy, light, and cloud-like.
2.Then, hot glue it to the outside of the paper lantern in various places. { Make sure it's fluffed to your liking, }
3. Light the candles and stick them inside.
4. Hang the lantern wherever you'd like.

My Top 10 Golden Globe Dresses that would make gorgeous wedding dresses...

Pin It Now!
I drooled over the style coming down the red carpet last night at the Golden Globes and while I willed myself to stay away through it all I eventually conked out and missed most... but that didn't desuade me from getting up and first thing picking my Top 10 Golden Globe Dresses that would make Gorgeous Wedding Dresses!

So here goes.... { in no particular order!}

1. Lea Michelle in Marchesa

How much sexy appeal to Lea ooze in this dress? I love the front, I love the back, I love the train, I love the hair and the make up = utterly stunning!

2. Angelina Jolie in Versace

Angelina rarely seems to get it wrong and she is bang on point again here today in this beautifully tailored and figure hugging Versce gown... of course it doesn't hurt when one of your main accessories of the evening is Brad Pitt!! { Ps... I just LOVE the splash of colour on the collar bone!! }

3. Kate Beckinsale in Cavali

Wow Wow Wow!  Kate is aisle ready in this gorgeous Cavali Gown! How amazing does her figure look? And how great are her boobs?

4. Julie Bowen in Reem Acra

I have to say I think Julie stole the show for me last night... I'm not saying that the girl doesn't regularly look fabulous, but she took it to a whole other level for herself at the Globes.  She looks utterly feminine and gorgeous in this Reem Acra dress and her hair and make up are just perfection - well done Julie, you are a stunner!

5. Claire Danes in J. Mendel

Wowzers! ~ enough said ;)

6. Nicole Richie in Juilen McDonald

I should hate it, but I don't... I think Ricole looks fabulous and that the dress is gorgeous!

7. Charlize Theron in Dior Couture

I could just look at this dress all day! I love the folds and the split and the train... every dress should have all of the above! ;)

8. Sofia Vegara in Vera Wang

I think Pippa Middleton's 'bum' has some serious competition! { Is it hot in here?} Sofia looks stunning... hotly tips for best dresses and well deserved!

9. Dianna Agron in Giles Deacon

This one I nearly missed, which would be a totally oversight on my part! Dianna looks stunning, hair, make up ~ the whole lot! Just LOVE the detailing on the dress!

10. Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier

Obviously I don't know Sarah Michelle, but for some reason I always considered her very serious. { No idea why!} Then I saw her in this dress, and heard her two your old choose it and I thought... you go girl! You look great, you're having fun and your dress {by far} is the statement piece!

Who where your favourites? Did you spot your wedding dress style... or something for the bridesmaids?

As you all know, I love to share the love and of course the oodles of Wedding Planning knowledge I have { it's part of the reason for this blog ;) } but some of you may not know that I also lecture and speak!

I love to share inspiring ideas, new creations or how -tos with brides and grooms and for some time now I have been invited along to a number of Wedding Fairs held in some pretty prestigious Wedding Venues around the country. This weekend is no exception and I will talking about The 36 Ways to Make Your Wedding Stand Out from the Rest at the Sligo Park Hotel, Pearse Road, Co. Sligo.

The Wedding Fair is taking place between 2 - 6pm and I'll be speaking just before their amazing fashion show!

Pop on down to see a gorgeous venue, meet some great Wedding Suppliers, possibly find your dream wedding dress and of course to hear me speak!

I'll also be available for brides & grooms to pick my brains and ask me anything on the day!

Hope to see you there!!

Not that I will ever tire of Wedding Cake but for 2012 I thought I would give your taste buds { and my waistlines } a little rest and move Monday's Wedding Cake Fix to Tuesday and make it a Wedding Ring Treat! :)

I don't know if I ever told you all this but I am currently on Engagement Ring No 3 { same guy, same marriage ;) } ... would anyone like to hear how I got to Engagement Ring No 3?

{ If so let me know and I may just devote a post to it :) }

Needless to say I am a magpie... are you? If its shiny and sparkly I am sure to like, love and long for it!

At the moment I am totally into Vintage {and inspired} settings and rings and just love this 1930's vintage engagement ring... which is actually not terrible dissimilar from my own.

Luxury Wedding on a budget of 10 thousand!

Pin It Now!
Another great Guest Post, this time with some nifty ideas on how to have a Luxury Wedding on a budget. By Emily Murray.

Of course everyone gets wrapped up during the excitement of getting engaged. After all, it is one of the biggest moments of your life! You have found the person you will spend the rest of your life with and that is certainly something worth celebrating.

Once the technicalities of planning the wedding come into fruition however, things can get a bit tense. In order to avoid as much of the stress as possible, the first thing you need to decide on is your budget.

...Ah the romance of discussing money; lots of times this can be an opportunity for your first nasty fight, too.

According to TheKnot.com, in 2008 an average wedding's cost was 22k. Yup. Twenty two THOUSAND American dollars. The good news? You can have an amazing wedding - flowers, food, photos, dancing - for less than half of that.

So let’s say that your budget is 10,000.

First question to ask yourselves is: When are you going to get married?

If you choose a day during the "off-season" for weddings, say the first three months of the year (except Valentines or other holidays), this can cut your costs. The next step is to decide on a venue. Where's all this going to go down? Your church or temple? City Hall? Mom and Dad's backyard? Inside? Outside? Each environment has its own budgetary needs.

A good example of a budget shows that the reception alone is going to be 35 - 50 percent of your budget. Now, if you're smart with this you can cut your costs by having a potluck reception, and a friend or a high school/college student managing the music or a photography major take care of your pictures or video (don't forget to ask for an example of the portfolio); This'll drastically lower your reception cost, and everyone gets to sample the foods that both your families believe to be super yummy. It'll also make an open bar, an amazing cake, or a better hotel room possible.

The invitations, gifts for each other and the wedding party (if you're following that tradition), transportation, rings, and ceremony should only be 3 percent each. You can find some nice do it yourself invitations that can be printed at home, cutting your cost for the invitations. Photos/Video, music, flowers, and your clothing are each going to take 10 percent each at the very most.

While his clothing can be and is an expected rental, what about your dress? Are you buying or renting? Using mom, grandma, or cousin Gert's? Don't forget that if you've got to pay for your honeymoon, it's got to be part of your budget, too.

Personally, though, I LOVED the wedding my husband and I had. It was a back yard wedding and family did everything, making it perfect for us - and inexpensive. Decide you’re "perfect" and build your budget around it.

5 Ways to Save when Planning a Wedding

Pin It Now!
I imagine after all the expense of Christmas and New Year many of you are possibly feeling the pinch this January! To help you on their wedding planning way today we've a great Guest Post by Kevin Kaiser on 5 Ways to Save when Planning a Wedding! ...

Many people consider their wedding day to be the most important day of their lives, so it's no wonder some are willing to spend an obscene amount to ensure that theirs will be perfect. However, breaking the bank on a one-day celebration isn't an option for everybody. The following are a few significant ways to cut back on your wedding day spending.

  1. Three words: Do. It. Yourself. While doing some of the wedding preparation yourself can definitely save you money, be sure to premeditate the potential ROI of taking the time to do something yourself rather than pay the full price to have somebody else do it for you. When you factor in the time and effort a project might require, the trade-off may not be worth it. However, if you have friends and family members who are willing to help you out, you could easily save a bundle by putting together things like invitations, centerpieces, and flowers on your own.

  2. Use a friend for your photographer. No, you shouldn't randomly ask one of your friends to take your wedding photos and hope for the best. However, as digital photography continually gets cheaper and easier to use, more and more people are exploring the medium in their free time—and some are pretty talented. If you're younger there's a pretty good chance that you know somebody who recently graduated with a photography degree and is looking to get some real-world experience under their belt. For this reason new photographers usually charge a lot less than established photography businesses do—especially if you've known each other for awhile. Just be sure to look at their portfolio of past work to make sure you won't end up with lackluster, amateur shots of your big day.

  3. Don't get caught up in  designer dresses. Sure, a certain designer dress might seem perfect, but essentially it's still just a dress that will only be worn once. Is it really worth thousands and thousands of dollars? If you're still willing to invest in an expensive dress, consider selling it once the celebration has passed to help minimize the cost.

  4. Compromise when it comes to flowers. From variety to quantity, you can probably cut back a lot when it comes to ordering flowers. For example, consider whether it's necessary for every member of the wedding party to have a corsage—they might end up looking awkward and tacky, anyway. And many wedding ceremonies are no more than 30 minutes long, so re-evaluate the amount of flowers you will need to decorate the venue.

  5. Location, location, location. When you're looking for a location at a great value, think about buying in bulk. Many venues offer "bulk rate" type discounts if you book the ceremony and reception together and use their catering services. This option might be an exceptionally valuable ROI because you'll be choreographing the day's events with fewer professionals, meaning in less stress for you, too!
  6. In the end, you'll want to have a unique and memorable wedding, no matter what your budget. Considering potential ROIs ahead of time can help make budgeting decisions easier when planning your big day.
