Wedding Cakes: The Elegance of Keeping it Simple.

Pin It Now!
Is there anything truly as nice as a wedding cake? Yes we all love birthday cake, and dessert cake and any other cake for that matter, but really, is there anything as nice [looking or tasting] as a wedding cake? I think not!

There are many arguments, many reasons and many photos that would encourage you to opt for something flash/ new/ designer/ exciting/ on-trend but I think these images speak from themselves and the 'keep it simple for your wedding cake' cause. Don't you agree?

Bridezillas: sometimes even I'm left in shock!

Pin It Now!
WARNING: This is a bit of a rant...

Over the years I've heard some shockers from my brides. I've been asked to get bridesmaids to sign contracts, produce snake charmers, and asked for indoor fireworks, I've even some further shockers from colleagues and friends in the industry [including a bride looking for a chastity belt!] but today, well today [kinda] took the biscuit.

Wedding TV anyone?

First my morning started off with a bit of reality Wedding TV in the form of Bridezillas, and I suppose, in hindsight I really shouldn't be so shocked about this, but I was [and am].

This episode featured a bride totally intent on having a 'celebrity wedding'. She had the celebrity make up artist, the celebrity hair dresser, couture dress [that was unfinished] and the celebrity wedding planner. [Combined nothing really major] but what nearly made me choke on my crunchy nut cornflakes was when the 'celebrity bride' didn't want to attend a close family members funeral, days before her wedding because its clashed with her his & hers celebrity botox... yes you read right!

I want it just like the Celebrities!

The 'celebrity [under 30] bride' forced her groom to have botox along with her AND she referred to it as the 'relaxing pampering that she had always dreamt of' ????? What took seconds, cost thousands and left them both in pain, puffy, blotchy and bleeding looked anything but relaxing and 'dream like'. The total wedding spend was $120k - and honestly I can't say they wedding was any different [in appearance] to what they would have got for $30k. [Sometimes there is really no account for taste or sense!]

Deep breath and off to work with me...

So with the celebrity his and hers botox still occupying my mind I head to work. I'm in the midst of checking a mountain of emails and in walks my intern. My current intern is a chatty little thing who goes through bouts of incessant chatter to stony faced silence. She walked in, stony faced, unusual for a Monday morning.

'Nice weekend?' I chirped

'It was eventful!'

'Ooohhh?'

'I've been  unbridesmaided'

'You've what?'

'Bride*, has told Me and Lucy* that she no longer wants us as bridesmaids'

You're just not what I am looking for in a bridesmaid

Turns out my lovely intern, and her lovely [pregnant] friend  Lucy don't 'fit' the wedding party vision! Having previously being asked to join [a popular weekly slimming group], this lovely bride decided that wasn't enough and that pictures were more important than friendships and cut the wheat from the wedding party chaff [so to speak] and has bestowed the 'honour' of Chief Bridesmaid on a size 6 whippet! More fool her is all I say! What bride wouldn't want her lovely life long friends standing with her on the most important day of her life! Especially one who is studying and working in weddings? All I have to say is I hope mocking isn't catching and how dare you treat me lovely little intern like that! :P

Ok rant over!

*ps names have been changed to protect real identities! :)

20 Tips to consider while shopping for a Wedding Dress.

Pin It Now!
Source
Wedding dress shopping is, by far, my most favourite thing to do with a bride!

Finding 'The Dress' is probably the one aspect of planning a wedding that each bride, both delights and fears, in equal measure. Wedding dress shopping is most definitely not for the faint of heart, it takes dedication, determination, research and patience! Here are 20 tips to consider before, during and after your Wedding Dress shopping:

1. Start looking a year out from the wedding or as soon as possible. Most bridal shops require an order to be placed 6-8 months out from your wedding date.

2. You will need to make an appointment with a bridal shop to go try on dresses. Some might have a 'walk in policy' on a given day - but my advice if you can, book your appointment and go when its quiet and you will have time and space.

3. You may be expected to pay a small charge to try on dresses. This can be anything from €25 - €50 per appointment - this charge is generally deducted from any dresses/ accessories purchased, but it is an additional wedding cost.

4. Be open to suggestion from the Shop Assistants. These guys know their wedding dresses. They work with them everyday - a really good one will know what will suit you best.

5. Don't bring your entire wedding party with you to a fitting. Yes you want them all to be involved, but Bridal Shops are often small and intimate [1] there wont be room for them all and [2] too many cooks spoil the broth - choosing a wedding dress can be difficult at the best of times, 3-4 other peoples opinions are not going to make it any easier on you! 1-2 additional people -max!

6. Do eat a small meal before you go. Trying on wedding dresses is intensive - you'll need your energy.

7. DO NOT wear fake tan or alot of make up. - Some bridal shops will not allow you to try on dress if you are covered in fake and bake and may ask you to remove your make up.

8. If you already have it, wear your wedding underwear to the fitting. If not, wear nude or white underwear. Wear a good fitting bra and even if you thinking a strapless dress wear a strapped bra. It gives you a better shape and you can always took the straps in.

9. Be realistic with a heel height. One and half inches to three and half inches is where you really want to keep your wedding shoes. Wear shoes, unless you already have your wedding shoes, in this height range - bridal shops will often have a selection of wedding shoes for you to choose from during a fitting.

10. If you need extra padding around the bust to make the dress sit better on you, ask the shop assistant does she have something you could use - they often have padding around for such reasons.

11. Wear your hair so that you can quickly clip it up and down during fittings to get a quick taste for how you might wear it with a given dress. Kirby clips are ideal for this.

12. During initial dress fittings you will be trying on stock dresses - these are normally sizes 10 -14. Dresses are clipped at the back to give a better idea if you a smaller than the stock size or a panel pinned into the back if you are a larger size than the dress - obviously a properly fitted dress with sit and move better on your body.

13. While you may be given a name and cost of the dresses that interest you at the end of your appointments not all shops disclose that they charge additional fees for additional fittings/ alterations [should they be required] remember to ask! These can sometimes be a few hundred euro.

14. Generally speaking, once ordered, the next time you see your dress will be approximately 6 weeks before your wedding when you will have a further fitting. Depending on additionally alternations you will pick up your dress anything from 6 weeks to a few days before your wedding.

15. Wedding dress sizing does not follow traditional clothes sizing. You might be a perfect size 10 when you head out to shops but might find the a bridal shop is ordering you a slightly larger size for your wedding dress - this is normal, do not be alarmed!

17. Bring a camera - ask before you use it, but it will help you remember what each dress was and how it looked.

18. Think of the type of wedding you are having, where it will be, the width of the church/ ceremony aisle. How big the toilets are in your venue. Will you be able to walk/ sit/ stand/ dance in the dress all day?

19. If you a going for a train make sure the bustles are good and strong. Ask about getting additional ones, they always break! I also suggest you invest in some really good 'nappy' safety pins - these can be used to pin up your dress as well. Wrist loops [in my opinion] are useless - they make the dress cumbersome and heavy - avoid at all costs!

20. You should aim to visit between 3 - 5 bridal shops [at least] before deciding on a wedding dress [even if it is the very first one you tried on]. You will most like try on about 5 dresses in each shop. Some shops only let you try on a set number, others it will depend on how many you get through in the allocated time!

Lots to take in there I think! Happy wedding dress shopping! :)

7 Questions to ask yourself before hiring a 'Friendor' for your wedding.

Pin It Now!
Source
We've all got them, friends with talents. Some might even be professionals [now they are the real friendors you want!] But, for the most part who I'm referring to here are the kind hearted [well meaning] friends who enjoy taking pictures, baking cakes, sowing dresses and pruning flowers.

As you watch your wedding budget slowing creep up to the equivalent of the deposit for your house, or even the mortgage itself, it can be tempting to wonder if 'getting a mate to do it' might be cheaper and it might seem that it would, initially. Or you might even have a number of [generous] friends offering their services. If so here are 7 questions you should ask yourself before hiring a friendor:

1. Are they your 'insert appropriate wedding vendor category here' or are they your invited guest who happens to be taking your photos/ driving your to the church/ baking your wedding cake. - There is a difference - a big one!

2. Do they have the proper skills/ talent/ experience to preform/ produce the wedding service they have so kindly offered? [ A wedding isn't a dress rehearsal - if they forget the extra camera battery or to bake the cake for the correct length of time, your wedding might not be the fairy tale you dreamt.]

3. Are you paying them for their service or is this a gift?

4. What happens if you are not happy with the results of their work? They are a friendor after all, how will you complain and or ask for more, or something different [and still remain friends if they get offended?!]

5. Do they have insurance - most likely they don't - what happens if they inadvertently [or even directly] cause an accident causing harm to you, the venue, property or a guest? Who pays up? -Most likely you!

6. Will you have a contract, or a formal agreement for what they are providing - if your hired a professional you most certainly would!

7. Do you have a back up plan if they get sick or can't come? They're [most likely] not a professional/ working in the industry so wouldn't have a partner/ back up vendor they would use regularly.

Lots to ponder there... and I'm sure I've left some things out too... I suppose what I am really saying here is, professionals are [in my opinion] the route to go, but I appreciate that that may not always be possible or within budget for everyone, and that's ok - but if you have gone the friendor route - for what ever reason, be prepared, be realistic, and don't be a afraid to make things a little formal... a little contract wouldn't go astray - I suggest you include:
  • The date, start and end times of the service, leaving time for setup and breakdown.
  • The address of where the wedding will take place.
  • The exact service provided, with a breakdown of goods or specifics.
  • The fee [if any], and when and how it should be paid
  • What you are required to supply them with and when.
  • A Plan B if they can't make it.
And as always [even without friendors] make sure you have Wedding Insurance!

16 Buttonholes to inspire you!

Pin It Now!
Yesterday' post got me thinking, when I think wedding flowers my main focus is always bride, church and reception. I'm ashamed to say the groom can often be an after thought for me when it comes to flowers - which is ironic really because I HATE when another plain boring buttonhole is pinned to a grooms lapel!

Yes buttonholes are small. [And I REALLY hate when a massive bloom is used that is so top heavy it often falls to the side, or just beheads itself.]

Yes they often get squished and squashed with all the hugs and kisses [that's why you order a second for after the receiving line]

But so so so much can be done with them, here are some of my favourite floral [because you can get really creative with them and have no flowers at all ;) ] buttonholes:

My Top 10 favourite Wedding Flowers.

Pin It Now!
I love flowers.

Not just for weddings, but in general. Is there anything better than seeing the house filled with fresh bunches of your favourite blooms? Second only to wedding dress shopping, choosing flowers for a wedding is amongst my most favourite thing to do!

In life, my most favourite flowers are tulips; specifically purple tulips. When it comes to weddings having just one favourite flower would be far too limiting and so I would have to say that my top ten most favourite weddings flowers are [in no particular order!]

1. Ranunculus - with a meaning of 'little frog' whats not to love? Ok, perhaps not every bride wants to be thinking about frogs on her wedding day - but these are gorgeous flowers non the less!

Source

2. Hydrangea - Love the colour options the hydrangea offers, not a fan of it as a plant, but can't get enough of it as a bouquet or an arrangement.

3. Gardenia - love their rich scent and they are are so pretty and delicate!

Source

4. Orchids - Personally I prefer orchids with a little colour - love the tropical feel they bring to an arrangement!

Source

5. Peony - they're big, bold, sweet and alluring - what's not to love? Ok they are a little more expensive than other blooms but their size means you don't need as many so it all balances out!

6. Stephanotis - these flowers make me think of Disney every time I see them - not sure why. I love their versatility - they work so well in their own bouquet or as a complimentary filler with other flowers.

Source

 7. Daisy - Who doesn't love daisies? So simple and elegant! And how wonderful does this Daisy & Dandelion Wedding Bouquet look?

Source

 8. Calla Lilly - I sometimes have a love hate relationship with this flower. Right now I'm in love. Featured here with Champagne Roses I think this wedding bouquet is the height of elegance!

9. Rose - need I say more? It's the smell, is the passion, its the romance... a rose by any other name would surely smell as sweet - no?

Source

10. Tulip - the symbol of happiness! I love the colours, I love the smell and I love, love, love the look! Enough said!

Pancake Bar for your wedding.

Pin It Now!
It's Pancake Tuesday so what better day to feature a fantastic Pancake Bar for weddings?

A very similar concept to the candy or dessert bar, a pancake bar is an excellent [and possibly surprising] alternative to a wedding cake or your dessert course. Of course you will have to check that either your venue will allow it [some chefs will only allow a wedding cake as the only 'outside' food on their premises] or if they can provide it for you!

Yummy....which reminds me... I must mix some pancake mix for this evening! What's your favourite topping?

Are the Royal Rumours true: Middleton to wear a McQueen?

Pin It Now!
Since the announcements that Prince William had finally gotten down on one knee and proposed and then when the wedding date of April 29th 2011 was set I am sure every single dress designer in the world started to dream that they would get the commission of a lifetime to design the wedding dress of century! In fact I am sure there were some who even employed a couple of PR firms, to candidly 'dropped' into circulation that 'they' were the designers 'hotly tipped' to dress Kate for the most important walk of her life [up Westminster Abbey's aisle]. For a long time the only name that seemed to keep coming up repeatedly, and with any real credibility was Bruce Oldfield and when Kate's mum and sister were pictured arriving for an appointment at 'Chez Oldfieled' I thought it was a [yet to be confirmed] done deal.

Apparently we've all been wrong! If latest reports are to be believed Kate Middleton will wear an Alexander McQueen dress designed for her by Sarah Burton. Mrs. Burton, who totally denies that she has scooped this coveted commission, joined the McQueen Team in 1996 as an intern, quickly becoming Alexander's right hand woman, after his tragic suicide she took over as Creative Director.

It's been said that Ms. Middleton first fell in love with Sarah Burton's design after seeing the wedding dress she designed for Sara Buys' wedding to Tom Parker Bowles [yes, you are right that is Camilla's son!] in 2005. When I first heard this, and the fact that Kate was looking for a dress that would stop critics calling her dress sense 'conservative' I thought that Ms. Buys dress must truly be something spectacular... when I found it I was sorely disappointed! See for yourself:

Sara Buy's wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen: Source

Personally I will be looking for something far more 'befitting' a future Queen and current style icon. What do you all think?

With Sarah Burton hotly denying that she is designing Kate Middleton's wedding dress who ever is 'locked up' in Buckingham Palace working on the most anticipated dress of the year I don't think we're going to be any the wiser until the big day itself...

The Engagement Shoot; A true love story.

Pin It Now!
The Game of Life = 1 Proposal + 2 Sweethearts + 3 Engagement Shoots.

Confused?

Before I elaborate let me introduce Melissa & Ben, the stars of this love story.

Happiness; beautifully captured by Spencer Combs

Imagine, one day, across a crowded pew you spot him, this gorgeous, dashing guy with a wide smile and twinkling eyes. He's a senior and you're a junior.

Finally he asks you out...

And over time teenage crushes

become...

Many blissful moments pass...

Then one rainy weekend afternoon Melissa and Ben play a board game. Melissa lands on a square, it tells her to 'Get Married', as she looks up and smiles, Ben looks across and says.... 'Will you marry me?'

And that's how The Game of Life lead to 1 proposal for 2 sweethearts who had 3 photoshoots to celebrate their love.

So until the day when they are wed

Two beautifully pieces of artwork, painted by Melissa's father, keep each of our love birds in mind of the other, until the artwork and our sweethearts will be reunited, on their wedding day.

Many sincere thanks to Melissa and Ben who allowed me to share their story and these amazing photo shoots with you all.

The Engagement Shoots took place in rural Decorah, Iowa among the bluffs, springs, and on Melissa & Ben's college campus, as well as in town at a local ice cream shop and behind some of the old buildings. They were all shot by the talented Spencer Combs, a recent winner of the Minnesota Bride's Best of Photography in 2010.

I should also mention that Melissa runs and owns Birdcage Bridal - The place to buy and sell new and used wedding items!
